The pool contractor handles the pool. The pool deck is a different conversation — and it’s usually one that doesn’t get enough attention until something goes wrong. We’ve installed pool decks for homeowners throughout the greater Cincinnati area and seen what works over time and what doesn’t. A well-designed pool deck handles drainage away from the pool and the home, stays cool enough to walk on barefoot in August, doesn’t turn into a slip hazard when wet, and looks like it belongs to the house — not like an afterthought.
Pool Deck Materials
Concrete Pavers — Our most commonly specified pool deck material. Individual pavers allow for natural drainage between joints, flex slightly under freeze-thaw cycles (reducing cracking), and can be replaced individually if one unit chips or stains. We typically recommend a tumbled or textured finish for slip resistance. Available in dozens of colors and patterns through Unilock and other manufacturers.
Stamped Concrete — A monolithic poured slab with a decorative finish pressed in before curing. Less expensive than pavers initially, but monolithic slabs are more susceptible to cracking in Cincinnati’s climate and cracks are difficult to repair invisibly. We offer stamped concrete for pool decks where budget is the primary constraint and will walk through the trade-offs honestly.
Natural Stone — Bluestone, limestone, and travertine are popular for higher-end pool settings. Natural stone stays cooler underfoot than concrete in direct sun and creates a distinctive look. Requires sealing and more careful maintenance than pavers, but is extremely durable when properly installed.
How We Build Pool Decks
A pool deck is subject to conditions that standard patios aren’t — constant moisture, pool chemicals, heavy foot traffic, and the expansion pressure of Cincinnati summers followed by hard winters. Every pool deck we install addresses these conditions directly: proper base depth (typically 8–10 inches of compacted aggregate), drainage sloped away from the pool and home, expansion joints placed at appropriate intervals, and coping details that integrate cleanly with the pool’s edge.
We coordinate with your pool contractor to make sure the deck installation sequence works with their timeline — typically the pool shell and coping are in place before we begin the deck surface. We’ll work directly with their crew if needed to make sure details at the pool edge are handled correctly.

Pool deck pricing depends heavily on size, material, and site conditions. A standard paver pool deck for a typical residential pool runs between $18,000 and $45,000. Stamped concrete decks run somewhat less. We provide detailed written proposals.
Most pool contractors want to see the pool fully operational for at least one season before the permanent deck surface goes in — this lets the ground settle around the pool shell. We can discuss sequencing during the design process and plan accordingly.
Yes — this is actually one of our most common projects. If your existing concrete deck is cracking, dated, or you simply want a fresh look, we can remove the old surface and install a new paver deck. We’ll assess the existing base condition and let you know if additional base work is needed.

Most homeowners find it much easier to plan and build the full space at once rather than adding components piecemeal over several seasons.
